Japan can open up models, specifications and individual vehicles that are difficult to find in the UK. But "Japanese import" is not a condition guarantee. The individual car, available auction information, photographs, condition notes and documents still matter.

02 / THE IMPORT JOURNEY

The exact route depends on the individual car. The important part is knowing what is confirmed, what is estimated and what still needs checking before money moves.

    Define the target

    Model, year range, specification, must-have options, realistic budget and timing.

    Find candidates and review evidence

    Compare available auction information, photographs, condition notes, mileage information and documentation for each candidate.

  3. 03

    Approve the car and budget

    Decide only after the specific vehicle and expected landed / road-ready cost have been reviewed.

  4. 04

    Purchase and export

    Complete the agreed purchase route in Japan, export handling and shipping arrangements.

  5. 05

    UK import and compliance

    Handle the applicable import, tax, port and vehicle-compliance requirements for that car.

  6. 06

    Prepare and register

    Carry out required checks or adjustments and complete the registration steps that apply.

  7. 07

    Handover

    Confirm the final paperwork, condition and agreed handover details in the UK.

Four questions worth answering before any specific vehicle becomes a real purchase.

Is JDM4U a live dealer stock website?

No. JDM4U is a buyer-education portal from Japan Motor Hub. Inspiration and past-project vehicles are not live stock unless they are explicitly labelled as available.

How much does it cost to import a car from Japan?

There is no useful one-size-fits-all number. The total depends on the vehicle price, Japan-side costs, shipping, UK duty and VAT where applicable, port handling, compliance work, registration and preparation. Ask for a vehicle-specific landed and road-ready estimate.

Does every Japanese import need IVA?

Not necessarily. GOV.UK lists cars and minibuses with no more than 8 passenger seats that are over 10 years old among the vehicle-approval exemptions. Younger or otherwise non-exempt vehicles can require approval, so the route should still be confirmed for the individual car.

What should I send JMH if I want a car sourced?

Send the model, year range, trim or specification, must-have options, realistic total budget and timing. If you are flexible, say what matters most and what you are willing to compromise on.
